Text Box: April Is National
Autism Awareness Month
Text Box: In order to highlight the growing incidence of autism and the need for information about it, April has been designated as National Autism Awareness Month. In December 2009, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported its new national autism prevalence rate as 1 in 110 children. In Colorado, the rate is 1 in 133. This makes autism one the nation’s fastest growing medical conditions, one that is growing faster than the rates of pediatric cancer, diabetes, and AIDS combined.
Please do your part in spreading the word about autism by participating in one of the local events listed in the box to below.

On February 25 and 26, Flatirons Community Church hosted “Shine,” a formal evening of dinner, dancing, games, and friends created specifically for community members who have cognitive, developmental, physical, and health related needs. By all accounts, the event was a tremendous success!  Approximately 500 guests and their caregivers signed up to attend the dinner and dance, and 50 additional caregivers opted to spend the evening in the Caregivers' Retreat, where they were treated to fantastic food, coffee, chocolate, warm neck wraps, and chair massages. Just as impressive, close to 1,200 community members volunteered to help at the event.  As one parent stated, Shine “. . . modeled how inclusion ought to look in society.”

Thanks to Flatirons Community Church for hosting such a great event.

Matt Mateyka and Sofia Stewart were two of the more than 500 attendees at “Shine”
